Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
The Creation Story in the Bible states that the earth was without form when it was created. Everything has form, so how can this be? Objects with form are made up of atoms. The Earth was made up of the pieces that make up atoms: protons and neutrons–also known as quarks.
Quarks start off at high temperatures, and stick together as they cool. They form protons and neutrons as they cool. As they cool further, they stick together to form an atomic nucleus.
An atom forms when it cools further and the nucleus captures one or more electrons.
The earth is made out of formed atoms. But, it is hard for anyone to conceive of anything without form. Even liquids and gases have form, but quarks and gluons do not. It is remarkable that Moses, especially for his time, could conceive of anything without form.
In Brookhaven National Laboratory in Long Island, NY, scientists have smashed atoms and atom nuclei together to form quarks and gluons. They call this the earliest thing that existed in the universe, aside from massive amounts of pure energy.
