Before Adam and Eve, there was Gobekli Tepe

We discuss a lot of topics related to the Bible. Some people even believe the Bible to be a literal record of complete history. They think that if something isn’t in the Bible, that it didn’t happen. But, there are more stories to tell, from even before Adam and Eve.

For instance, there is the story of Gobekli Tepe, located in modern day Southern Turkey. It dates about 6000 BC, and shows evidence of civilization and skills far advanced for the time.

According to Graham Hancock’s website, five-ton megalithic limestone pillars stand 18 feet above the floor of sub-circular structures, completed with stone and clay mortar walls and founded on bedrock below the surrounding ground surface.

The pillars include bas relief of various animals – mostly predatory – such as wild boars, lions, foxes, scorpions, frogs, vultures, and other birds. The purpose of the structures remains unknown, but it is theorized it has to do with early organized religion in which animals are defied.

The structures at Gobekli Tepe are generally lacking  subdivided space other than what appear to be few peripheral hallways or storage areas. Rather than a temple of worship with a common area separated from a sacred space such as an alter or place of offering, the temples at Gobekli Tepe have the appearance of undivided open, circular structures except for two T-shaped pillars placed off center within each structure and aligned generally in a northeast-southwest direction. ‘

The open, rounded shape is similar to a modern day arena or even the Roman coliseum where spectators observed games from peripheral seating while participants were located on the central floor area of each structure – like theater in the round. The temples are preserved because the people intentionally buried them not long (perhaps several hundred years) after their construction.

Only a fraction of the site has been excavated. But evidence suggests the site was developed as a sacred space.

About 12,800 years ago it suffered the Younger Dryas–a type of ice age. It stayed cold until about 11,500 years ago. This period may have been caused by a comet striking the earth.

The Younger Dryas is viewed as a crucial period for humanity, as it roughly coincides with the emergence of agriculture and the first Neolithic civilizations.

When engineers studied animal carvings on the vulture stone in Gobekli Tepe, they concluded they symbolized constellations and the comet. They helped identify where the constellations were at the time, and helped date the time to about 10,950 BC.

The change in temperature had a dramatic impact on culture, causing the the natives to come together and establish new permanent base camps.

What does all this information mean since it predates Adam and Eve? How does it fit in with the Bible since it predates everything except Genesis, Chapter 1?
